Caroline Tilston, author of the Garden Style Guides, gives her five top tips to make a dark corner or dingy patio brighter...

1. Reflective surfaces – Mirrors, silver containers, even a water feature will all reflect light about.

2. Paint the walls – render them first – the smoother and lighter the surface the more the light will bounce off it. So a wall which has been rendered and painted a white colour will give back aeons more light than a light- sucking red brick wall.

3. Put light reflective elements on the ground – Light coloured gravels will help to bounce light up. The best surface to make the most of every drop of light is a smooth light-coloured tile or white limestone.

4. Plants – Don’t put in any heavy dark green plants on walls, instead, keep them to a minimum and only have variegated or light green plants.

5. Put in artificial lights – you can help the daylight along a little with spots and uplighters.
