Surfing: A Beginner's Guide by Alf Alderson
Published by Wiley Nautical, April 2008
This book is essential for anyone who has a burning interest in learning to surf. Written by a seasoned surfer and award winning journalist, the reader will gain a keen insight into the foundations of surfing from choosing the correct equipment to catching that great first wave. Surfing: A Beginner's Guide is adorned with full-colour step-by-step photographs and this edition is complemented by an updated green seas section discussing the impact of global warming on surfing.
Surfing is a sport that has grown in popularity since its introduction in the 1960s: it has gone from cult status to an activity that sees children, students and professionals all sharing the waves. This helpful guide not only gives tips for pre-surf preparation but also imparts information on the best equipment (as well as its care and maintenance).
While the sea is renowned for its beauty, it's also infamous for its dangers. Surfing: A Beginner's Guide addresses such concerns and provides readers with transferable skills to safely enjoy their new hobby. With no doubt, safety features heavily in this book, and Alderson cuts no corners in going over the basic common-sense aspects of surfing that even the most experienced surfer occasionally forgets.
