Is the Grass Always Greener on the Other Side? Author of the new Garden Style Guides, Caroline Tilston, gives her Pros and Cons For Owning a Lawn...
April is the month to....bring out the lawnmower…if you have a lawn. There’s something called a spring growth spurt that grass goes through and, especially if the nights are mild, you can almost see the grass growing up and up.
But do you really need that grass? How liberating would it be to throw that mower
away? Here’s a quick guide to the pros and cons of losing the lawn…
For having a lawn
1. They give year round greenery, a real plus if you live in a city.
2. Compared to other types of plants, grass is low maintenance.
3. They are cheap to put in and cover a large area.
4. Grass is great to lie on and children love to play on it.
Against having a lawn
1. They bake and go brown in hot summers. They get muddy and brown in wet winters.
2. If the area is small it will really suffer if it gets too much use – the grass will wear away.
3. Small gardens tend to be quite shady and grass never does very well in shade.
4. Children can’t ride bikes on lawn, or play on it in soggy winter weather.
5. Lawns are pretty much no good at all for wildlife.
6. Compared to decking or stone lawns are high maintenance.
7. You will need a mower and somewhere to store it.
There are certainly more ‘cons’ if you have a small garden and it would be really worth looking at putting down paving and giving yourself a break from the mower.
