I Hate Presentations! ...Transform the way you present with a fresh and powerful approach
By James Caplin
Published by Capstone, May 08
The aim of a new book by James Caplin, I Hate Presentations, is to help readers become better at preparing and doing presentations. However, there is a secondary aim - to be part of the process of ridding the world of poor presentations, so that we all have to suffer through fewer of them. The author's belief is that, once readers start doing really good presentations – ones that deliver – people will notice. They will benefit, personally and professionally, and others will begin to improve the way they do presentations too. That will help make us happier and speed the flow of information
in the business world.
Aren’t most presentations AWFUL? PowerPoint slide after PowerPoint slide, the presenter droning on, trying to prove he or she is clever, and boring you into submission. And preparing presentations just adds to the stress of already busy work lives. You have to sort out what to say, probably produce some slides and handouts, and – in the end – the audience don’t even really seem to listen.
When you do a presentation, it is nerve-wracking. Will it work? Are you going to say the right thing? Should you be putting in more jokes? More facts? More evidence? Or less jokes, facts and evidence... Almost everyone in today’s workplace feels at least some of these feelings – many of us feel them all. Here’s the good news: it need not be like this. This book will help readers give presentations in the workplace more easily, prepare them more quickly – and have lots more fun doing so. Presentations will deliver better results; for presenter, audience, teams, businesses and careers.
About the author
James Caplin became a coach after a five-year campaign to clear his housing area in West London of its long-standing sex-and-drugs market. The campaign, which involved many residents, a great deal of community activism, and much work that was new to James, resulted in a peaceful neighbourhood and a heightened sense of community. It was from this experience that James realised the importance of presenting yourself powerfully – especially, when in an apparently inferior position. From this, James coached a CEO to do a presentation, which has led to a wider practice of one-to-on coaching, workshops and group coaching where clients have included Notting Hill Housing Trust, MorganStanleyQuilter and DaimlerChrysler UK. James has a degree in English Literature and worked as a freelance scriptwriter of training and information videos and other multimedia. In 2003, he became a full-time, freelance executive coach, running several communication skills workshops, including one on presentations that proved so popular that it has inspired him to avail it to a wider audience in book form.
