Why many workers are making 2008 their ‘Leap Year’

4_18411279812008 is only in its infancy and already there is talk of financial crashes, economic uncertainty and business instability. So you might not think 2008 is the ideal climate for launching a new business.

But despite this backdrop, the UK’s entrepreneurial spirit is as vibrant as ever; starting up a new business is still a popular option for workers looking to reignite their careers. Ian Sanders’ new book Leap! Ditch Your Job, Start Your Own Business & Set Yourself Free is evidence of this trend; it was published by Capstone in January and has been at or close to the top of Amazon.co.uk’s chart on starting your own business ever since.

Sanders_iain_2Author Ian Sanders believes entrepreneurship is rising due to the power and determination of the individual; people getting enterprised to do their own thing. He says that empowering people to choose their own destiny makes workers more effective and productive:

When you set up on your own, a blank order book or an empty spreadsheet is a great motivation to get people sweating. You need to focus on turning ideas into invoices, and creating commercial opportunities. It’s hard, but there is no option to sit back. You have to make it succeed, you have to make it pay”.

Ian’s book is a tell-it-like-it-is guide to working for yourself, describing the highs and the lows and what you need to be successful: the right mindset from the start and an enterprising approach to turn ideas into opportunities.

More and more workers are choosing to go it alone, and with virtual working, home-working and outsourcing on the up this trend is set to continue. This new breed of lean micro-entrepreneurs who have taken the leap have business models that are flexible, open to change and recession proof.

There are no flash offices, no big departments of staff on the payroll, no unwieldy organisational structures. 2008 is a year when a man or woman with a mobile phone, a laptop, a bunch of contacts and some good business ideas can prove anything is possible when it comes to succeeding at business.
