Frommer's Day by Day: Beijing Tipped for an Olympic-sized Year
To be Published by Frommer's - February 2008
Setting for the 2008 Summer Olympics, Beijing is set to welcome thousands of athletes, spectators, and dignitaries throughout the year. A study in juxtaposition, Beijing can be a daunting mix of skyscrapers, traditional neighbourhoods, fusion restaurants and donkey carts. That’s why Frommer’s Beijing Day by Day guide, to be published next month, aims to help readers make the most of their trip with time saving tips, hundreds of images, suggestions for one, two and three day tours, transport guides and full size pull out city maps.
As with all books in the Frommer’s Day by Day series, the guide opens with the authors’ “favourite moments,” in this case including tea at the Laoshe Teahouse whilst traditional musicians and dancers perform or a morning walk at the Temple of Heaven, where locals practice tai chi and draw calligraphy in water on the pavements. The book then gives suggested highlights for special interest touring, i.e., Beijing for Art Lovers, cycle itineraries and even ‘Red Beijing.’ Exclusive to this first edition publication is a guide to the 2008 Summer Olympics, including a map of venues, ticketing information and tips on travelling around the city during this time.
The guide continues in this vein, giving honest advice on the best places to go and where to avoid. All hotels, restaurants and attractions featured have been given a star rating based on the quality, value, amenities and special features on offer. Zero stars means that it is recommended, and three stars are awarded to exceptional places. If it’s not recommended, then it simply isn’t featured in the guide. What’s more, icons are used throughout to give user-friendly tips such as what age group or price range an attraction is suitable for.
